The following notes are from my sermon this weekend. They are intended to be a compliment to the broadcast of the sermon, available at our website: www.reachingthesummit.com under the media tab or follow this link!
Jesus Reset: The Gate
John 10:1-10
Pre-Sermon: Video from “Bruce Almighty” – Signs from God
Open: Assuming that God is speaking, are you Listening? What are you Hearing?
Sound bites – What did you recognize? How can we hear God’s Voice?
Text: John 10:1-10 “I am the Gate”
Historical Context of Shepherd, Nuances of the Text, Climax: Promise of Life
What’s Jesus Saying to You?
1) He’s Calling you by Name – Sweetest Sound
Harry Truman knew thousands of names. I don’t. It is a struggle.
But God, knows you by name
Mother & Child –Isaiah 49:15
2) He knows you intimately, but still calls you – Groucho Marx (Wouldn't belong to any club that would have him) Makes you suspect Jesus and His standards?
Love the story of the Prodigal Son and his self-righteous brother (Luke 15)
Why? That’s me – in both instances, at different times.
Yet Christ loves me; He most assuredly loves you
3) He Calls You to what? – “I am the Gate.” What does it lead to? Life!
Story of the gift of a Van; if you are left wondering how you can get one, you missed the point of the story
Hospital visit. Temptation is to speak in empty platitudes –
Everything OK? No. Can’t promise that. So we speak truth in love –
God holds the future and Christ has promised to be present.
So don’t waste a moment grieving what might have been,
Dare to live life in love!
4) Ah, and as The Gate – Christ opens the door to life, and carefully shuts out
what detracts from life. Like what?
Next Week – The Good Shepherd!
Jim, love the Worship Recap! Hope you'll do this every week.
